OK, so if our bodies need to burn X number of calories a day to maintain our body weight, then it should be easy to lose weight, right? It would seem then, that all we have to do is slash the number of calories that we consume. Sounds like common sense. But how many calories do I need to lose weight?
Unfortunately there are a lot of studies that show that drastically cutting calories like this does not work for the long term. The American Journal of Nutrition, in a recent study, showed that a group of individuals on a low calorie diet, who lost an average of 26 percent of their body weight during the course of the study, regained almost 75 percent of their lost weight back within three years of completing the study.

Now, you are probably scratching your head wondering "how many calories should I eat to lose weight". Well, I will tell you this, if weight loss were as simple as "don't eat more than 1000 calories a day" then everybody would be skinny.
A study published in the Journal of American Medicine showed how a group of people put on a very low calorie diet experienced a 20 percent decline in their metabolism ( the slower our metabolism is, the slower we burn calories) in the first month and their metabolism continued to fall for three months straight after that.
Desperate to lose weight quickly, people get hooked on this type of diet, as with many fad diets, because, you see immediate results. Of course, you are constantly starving, can't concentrate because of the hunger and you are quite irritable, but hey, at least you are looking good, right. Wrong. This is one of the many dangers of fad dieting.
Unfortunately, the results do not last very long. The weight loss slows, then stops altogether. So, no matter how much you starve yourself you will see no rewards. And let's face it, how can you last on a diet where you are constantly starving. This is why low calorie diet plans fail. And then, as if it isn't bad enough already, if you start eating normal or increase your calories even a little bit...the pounds come piling back on, undoing all of your hard work. Definitely not a good way to maintain weight loss.
We need to be smart when it comes to dieting and weight loss. A successful weight loss diet plan is a combination of proper healthy dieting and exercise. We need to be sensible when it comes to our bodies, starvation for the sake of dieting is dangerous.
Eat healthy and stay motivated, the weight will come off and stay off.
